How might we

use smart product technology to help people with dementia feel more engaged with friends, family, and the outside world?


Research

Dementia is an affliction that is difficult for both the patient and the patients caretakers. It is discouraging, it is scary, and it is painful.

It was important to me that understood the position these people are in so that I could approach my design with empathy and believability.

Through interviews and research I constructed a user journey to illustrated the experience of taking care of someone with dementia. This was a helpful tool when in determining which problems to prioritize.

I developed some product goals to give myself direction and show what a successful product would look like.

I liked the idea a having a smart product that was very physical and would feel familiar to an older person.

The product is a bridge between the digital and physical.

Family can share digital information that is displayed in a way that the senior can understand.

The senior can share information in a way that is accessible to their family.

I wanted to keep the product as easy to understand as possible, so deciding which features to include was important. The product needed to be engaging but not overwhelming.

Together the physical and digital create a product that will engage people with dementia, help them to function more on their own, and will take some of the strain off of their caretakers.
